SB_16 Celestial Boarders

Suppose that stars were individual conscious beings, characterized, like people, through their transient actions. They had their own lives and duties and had beckonings and self-awarenesses of purpose and responsibility. They had desires to travel and love and lose and love again. They had desires to create and pursue dreams. They felt fulfillment through manifestation of those dreams. They felt frustration under short-comings and Cinderella stories. They felt sorrow after their creations were complete; a sorrow stemming from the artistic struggle. A sorrow that would suggest that one’s ephemeral achievements do not equate a finite journey.
Suppose that a shooting star is a fleeting being, traveling on to his or her’s next pursuit.
Suppose that when we strap to our snowboards and descend Boreal’s galactic face, we are shooting stars: celestial boarders.

There has been a slight disturbance in our journey. All the resort hopping and spot bopping set our collective head spinning. We longed for a breather; for a step out of winter’s world. A step into sand; a step into the belovedly over-exaggerated, culturally bizarro spring break. We were long overdue for an uninhibited release.
Considering we couldn’t afford a trip to Cabo or SXSW, we did the next best thing: we went to the beach in Tahoe. The sand was hard and no naked women were present, and margaritas were replaced by a couple Budweisers, and the only white was the few inches of actual snow scattered on said hard sand. Still, we were on a beach making questionable decisions. What the fuck ever, dude, it’s Spring Break. Ride the wave 😛

Strange Brew 16_Flower Petals

(SB16_FlowerPetals)
A flower is awe-felt. A true concoction of beauty: patient, individual, and an honest expression of subtlety and reflection of one’s environment. Though the root system, stem, and leaves are vital, and, in that notion, equal in beauty; the pull of the flower derives in the petals. At first, they cocoon the bud, preparing and keeping safe the prized seeds. Then they reveal their personality in bloom. This is what most people like about flowers. And yet, no matter how much pruning and attention you give these precious ones, their time will eventually run; these poor fellas will all drop their petals.
We here at Strange Brew like to think of these photos and our correlated edit as fallen petals. These are all gems to us – yes, they are precious – and yet, they had to go. In a way, our snowboarding is just a game of “She loves me, She loves me not”. Or perhaps we see the transcendent notion of an old dandelion, whose soft white seeds are billowing in the wind, blown in one heap breath from a small child. Maybe, it’s just as simple as a buttercup under your chin, revealing not only whether or not you like butter, but also, more importantly, a smile. Now, with all that pondering properly posed, please take a moment to view our fallen petals.

Strange Brew 16 – Episode 2

Our last episode highlighted on the sorcery that occurs at Boreal (what they call “Boreal Magic”) and left the viewer on a transpersonal cliff, offering the supposition that perhaps what we are learning from this mountain has meaning beyond an affinity to our snowboards. Well, we kept boarding and we continued to discover new reaches of ourselves, to which can only be attributed to Her magical qualities. She has attracted new faces; those of ancient folklore and some of more recent conquests. Through this change, we have expanded our cult internally and externally: among all aspects of the boarder. Though we pursue this exploration into the mind and core, we still find ourselves as lost as ever. This is neither here nor there, though, as we have companionship and boards and Boreal’s spells to keep our hearts digging in what may not be the right direction . . . but at least it’s some direction.

Strangers Welcome – A Movie

The boys from Strange Brew have hit the big time, and even though if you care you probably already watched this movie on the Internet somewhere else, they’re still hoping for some ruthless hate from by having us post their full movie here. Man, it’s great to feel wanted.

#tbt: Strangers Welcome EP 6: Boreal

it has come to my attention that we all felt a similar contempt under the seasonal vacation migration of shitbag cityslickers unto our respective holylands. our home at boreal was not spared. in fact, it was a grade A holiday shit show. it was as if baby jesus, the reason why the entire bay area decided they had to come to boreal for the week, was immaculately conceived and delivered into the hands of satan.
which is actually pretty tight.
that’s why dan took the ol’ cam out and we joined the crowds on hill to make our sixth installment of strangers’ welcome.

Rome SDS: Beer and Rails

Liquid courage. Nerve tonic. Pork chop in a can. Whatever you call it, it’s all the same once it hits your lips: BEER. This adult beverage has been entwined with snowboarding since the dawn of time—cold ones kicked back in the parking-lot, a 12-pack at the spot, or late-night shotguns at a house party.

The Strange Brew boys are no strangers to slugging cold ones. They’ve built their reputation out of Tahoe by thrashing urban environments, traveling by van, and crushing cans all the while. Thousands of miles away across an ocean, Toni Kerkelä has spent his seasons meticulously picking apart street spots and filming hammers on his home turf of Finland. Toni’s built his reputation by putting out multiple video parts every year, full of his crisp style. When you park the Strange Brew van in the U.S. and mash them and Toni together in Finland, you get “Beer & Rails”.

When the wave of fermented grain finally crashed and washed Strange Brew up on the streets of Jyväskylä, Finland, they got a two-week guided session of Toni’s home-town spots. The crew was comprised of Riley Nickerson, Keenan Cawley, Ian Daly, Jasper Tripp, and Toni Kerkelä. With equal parts raw snowboard talent, beer-soaked ambition and an eye for unique lines, the newly-forged crew took it hard to the streets in search of late-night sessions and urban creativity.
