Snocial: Max Wharin

The first time I remember seeing Max Wharin’s work was on Tumblr. It was a shot of my friend Mike Chmil skitching outside the open door of a minivan. Something about this photo struck me on a deeper level; it seemed to capture the light heartedness of snowboarding. After checking out the rest of his shots I became a huge fan of his work, mainly his lifestyles which reminded me a lot of Darrell Mathes’ work for Howl. I recently took a minute to talk with Max about his photos and his upcoming projects. I highly suggest giving Max a follow on Instagram and Tumblr as well as follow the Trash League Instagram to see more of his work.

How did you get into photography?

A few years ago I flirted with the idea of getting a camera but I couldn’t afford a fancy new one so my mother gave me her old Nikon film camera, and I was instantly hooked. I saved my dollars and eventually bought my first camera and have just gone from there.

What’s your favorite shot from this season?

It’s a tough call, but one of my favorite shots from this winter is of Denny front blunting this green rail to bank, he is framed nicely in the trees and the colors worked super well.

How’d you get linked up with the Trash League crew?

Before this winter I had never really done any snowboard photography but I knew I wanted to get into it. Last summer I texted Mike and asked if he had planned on having anyone in particular shoot photos with him in the winter and he didn’t, so I figured I would give it a shot.

How did the opportunity to work with Lucas Beaufort come about?

I had been a fan of Lucas’s work for a while, it always got me stoked. When I found his account on Instagram I immediately followed him and liked a bunch of his stuff not thinking anything of it, but the next thing I knew he had commented on one of my photos asking permission to paint on it. Since then we have emailed back and forth a bunch and he has painted on 2 of my photos, which I am very excited about.

What are your plans for next season/the future?

This winter approaching I will be shooting as much as I can, travelling with the boys on a bunch of trips and boarding anytime in between shooting.
