RIP James Van Doren

Los Angeles Times has an in depth and very cool (for an obit) obitituary on Vans co-founder James Van Doren, who passed away Oct 12 at 72 after a long illness. It’s pretty hard to debate that Vans is one of the most, if not the most, influential brands in skate culture and accordingly in snowboard as well, and we have this man to thank for low-profile, functional skate shoes in an era of puffy tongues.

“He was a mechanic, a chemist, the brains behind the early shoe,” said his nephew, Steve Van Doren, one of several family members who still work for the company. “In his garage, he made all the molds for the very first soles,” including the trademark waffle design.
