At 10 am yesterday the first person went to the site and got a “this site may be dangerous” warning, emailing me the first of many texts, facebook messages and emails I would receive about it. “Did you know your site is down?” is basically the most fun thing to hear when you’re pulling your hair out, but I do genuinely appreciate the concern.
Here’s what happened: The hacks in our tech department (me) had the permissions set too low on our ad server, and also hadn’t bothered to upgrade when a new version came out. This enabled some spammer to get in there and install malicious code into every ad appearing on the site. Pretty awesome. Of course, I didn’t figure it out until this morning, and all day yesterday I tried just about everything else, including, but not limited to, deleting entire sections of the site (if you want to catch up on Best Week Ever, you’ll have to wait until we repost it, whenever that will be…) Of course none of that helped because it was the ad code. But I figured that out and boom, no more warning! (No more ads, but never fear awesome YoBeat sponsors, we’ll get that fixed ASAP.)
Now for those of you on PC’s who decided to ignore the warning: YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE DONE THAT. The good news is, PC’s have been getting virus since slightly after the dawn of civilization, and you’ll just need to run a good anti virus to get rid of it. We’ve also decided to name it the Shaun White virus, and hope it catches on. If you need help figuring out how, Let Me Google That For You.
If didn’t get to check out the COMUNE movie last night because of this, never fear! Our favorite edits are posted here, and you can check out all seven of them at http://thecomune.com/blackholes/
