Aye Matey: The New Skater Island
by Brooke Geery For
the past couple weeks I've been trying to find out if Skater Island in
Middletown,
RI had completed it's expansion. I finally decided that
the only way to figure it out was to go there myself. I made the voyage on
May 8th, and when I got there I was greeted by quite a pleasant surprise.
The one they call Crazyhorse let us know we had come on the right day, as
the bigger bowl was right inline to be complete. I spent the day drooling
over it while a layer of masonite was applied. Finally around 7:00 it was
determined that it was done enough, and the crew was given a 12-pack so
they'd stop working. This is when the session got started. Of course, I
couldn't cut it with the big boys for long, so I retired to the deck with
my digital camera. Luckily for you, this means I took lots of pictures.
Before I get into that however, a little disclaimer. As a skateboard photo
editor, I am about as accomplished as the people who choose extreme sport
photos for non-industry companies, ("So what he's not grabbing, the
composition's great!") Basically, I have no idea if these photos are
any good, but you'll get the idea either way.

I believe this guy's name is Jack. He did a really cool backside
Smith grind on the pool coping, but I wasn't paying attention to
shoot it, so instead, I'm pretending this is a good shot. Right: I
asked Tim to write down his full name for me so I wouldn't
misspelled it. He agreed, and quickly penned two words, "BIG
TIM."

The infamous Crazy Horse was one of the first to drop in to the new
ramps. He proceeded to kill it for the remainder of the evening,
even though it was snowing inside the park. Either that or it was
dusty, but I'm going with the former. Hey, it was only about 90
degrees out, and the park is indoors, it could happen. |
