The 2000 US Open Snowboard Championships Our not-so-comprehensive coverage The Aftermath Marh 20, 2000
On Saturday afternoon, in the midst of the excitment over the halfpipe finals, I learned that two kids from New Hampshire had been in a terrible accident. Left without a place to stay Friday night, they dug themselves a snow cave in one of the parking lots. Sometime during the night, it collapsed on top of them. When they were found on Saturday around 8:00 am, neither was breathing or had a pulse. Doctors were able to revive one, but it was too late for the other, who had already died of asphexia. His name was Jake Shumway, he was 20 years old and lived in Hopkinton, NH. The other was Rob Carr, a fellow student of mine at Plymouth State College. When I first heard about this whole situation, he was still showing signs of life. He was brought to Darthmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment, but died later that day. He was only 18 years old, also from Hopkinton. The official cause of death was hyptothermia. It's hard to beleive that at an event of this magnitude, something like this could happen. I only found out as soon as I did because I was close friends with the victims. There was not a mention of the occurence at the event or anywhere all weekend, nobody knew. When the local paper came out on Sunday morning there was a small article, burried within the pages, but even then, details were sketchy. It was Monday when I found out my friend Rob had died. I didn't really know Jake.
