Nationals
vs. Nationals
by Brooke Geery

Steve Crampton, admitted pipe junkie placed better in slopestyle
then in halfpipe at the USASA Nationals. I dare you to explain that one. |
Ahh, March, the fine month in
which every snowboard organization holds their National Championships. This year, as a
special treat, both USSA and USASA chose to hold their events on the East Coast, and I got
to experience both, only one week apart. Now I'm pretty tired of thinking about these
events, but I'm going to put all that aside in order to to determine, in an unbiased
manner, which of the two events is cooler. |

Colin Langlois not only got above the lip at the USSA Nationals,
but Ross Powers gave him a haircut there as well. |

USSA Nationals |
USASA Nationals |
| Dates |
March 20-23
Advantage: USSA (The early bird catches
the worm, and the leftover US Open competitors) |
March 29- April 1 |
| Location |
Okemo, VT
Advantage: tie |
Waterville Valley,
NH
Advantage: tie(The 603 will fight me if
they lose this one) |
| Weather |
Sunny for the GS and
Slalom, ominous clouds during the halfpipe and boardercross, but remained relatively warm.
Advantage: USSA |
Rain, hail, sleet
and snow, biting cold, but it was sunny and warm for the GS. |
| Length |
4 days, but only two
that needed attendence, halfpipe and boardercross. Everyday was over by 4:00.
Adantage: USSA |
4 days, with every
discipline on everyday. Average day ended at 5:30. |
| Course Conditions |
The halfpipe was
more than head high.
Advantage: USSA |
Obviously effected
by the rain and warm weather. |
| Disciplines |
Slalom, GS, Halfpipe
and Boardercross |
Slopestyle,
Halfpipe, GS, Boardercross and Slalom.
Advantage: USASA |
| Age Groups |
Pro Event: No age
groups.
Adavantage: USSA (a time saving issue
more than anything) |
Every age group from
under 10 to 70+ |
| Average Competitors |
Anyone who didn't
have somewhere better to be after the US Open, and anyone one in contention for the truck.
Advantage: USSA |
Academy kids whose
parents really want them to make it. |
| Prize Money |
$1700 for first
place in every event, and a truck for the overall tour champion, not to mention the glory
of a pro national title.
Advantage: USSA |
$100 less than the
entry fee for first in the open class, cheesy plastic medals and the glory of a pro
national title for everyone else. |
| Nightlife |
A Snowboarder
Magazine/Burton party that wrecked a condo and raged from 2 in the afternoon until the wee
hours of the morning.
Adavantage: USSA |
Some underage dance
clubs, and a lot of early bedtimes. |
| Night time highlight |
Karla Gembarowski's
table dance and a potato gun. |
Got me, I had better
things to do then go out, like watch TV.
Advantage: USASA (I like TV, okay?) |
| Amount of Alcohol consumed
per day |
Too much to count, I
mean, Pat Bridges was there. |
I think some of the
15-16 age group was doing shots in the woods.
Advantage: USASA (drinking is bad, unless
you're underage, then it's cool.) |
| Best Trick |
Tommy Czechin's
almost stomped 1080. |
Some kid on a
Salomon's 10 foot mctwists to deck.
Advantage: USASA |
| Biggest Name |
Ross Powers was
there, but he didn't ride because he didn't want to fail the drug test.
Advantage: USSA (Kyle is only exciting if
Mark Sullivan is there to heckle him.) |
Kyle Clancy and
Danny Kass. |
| Announcers |
Mark Sullivan and
Pat Bridges, with help from friends.
Advantage: USSA |
The kid that does
the Boarderfests. |
| The Response |
No feedback received
what-so-ever on coverage. |
Tons of angry
letters, a thread on the Transworld message boards, and some very upset parents.
Advantage: USASA |
Final Score: USSA 11 vs. USASA 6
But, as it turns out, neither event was very
cool. |
