Inaugural Carinthia Open Mega Plaza (C.O.M.P.) Snowboard Throwdown at Mount Snow

WEST DOVER, Vt. (Feb. 28, 2013) – On Saturday, March 9 at Mount Snow in southern Vermont professional and amateur snowboarders will find themselves staring down a competition venue unlike any they’ve ever seen. Carinthia’s acclaimed park builders, led by Freestyle Terrain Manager Day Franzen, are going to construct a one-of-a-kind, mega plaza-style setup that will be loaded with rails, boxes, bonks and a whole arsenal of unique features found nowhere else but here. Athletes will need to choose their line carefully so they can go big, get technical and flex their style to walk away with a piece of the $6,000 cash purse for pros or gear from event sponsors for the amateurs in this jam format competition.

Using a plaza set-up for a snowboard competition was the brainchild of Franzen and his park crew. A “plaza”, in terrain park terms, is loosely defined as an area completely filled with strategically placed terrain park features offering riders countless different lines to choose from. And with the absence of a large-scale snowboard competition on the east coast, he felt it was time to change things up a bit from the traditional slopestyle and superpipe disciplines that most of the bigger events feature.

“It seems to me that snowboarders are hungry for a competition that allows them the opportunity to get more technical and creative,” says Franzen, who has managed Mount Snow’s Carinthia Parks since 2011. “The C.O.M.P. is going to showcase how far snowboard athletes have come, beyond just flying through the air.”

Red Bull has kicked in $1,000 to be handed out on-site to athletes that throw down the best tricks of the day.

Registration for the C.O.M.P. is $50 which includes a lift ticket for the day and entry into the competition. Event sponsors are Neff, Nixon, Bern and Oakley.
